CYNTHIA LANGFORD
I was born in northern Ontario and was raised in the small town of Schreiber which is located on the beautiful shores of Lake Superior. My family is Anishinaabe (Ojibway) from Flying Post First Nations.
As a child growing up I was taught to appreciate and respect the wilderness and wild beauty all around me. It is only after the awakening from Truth and Reconciliation that I have learned more about my indigenous heritage and traditional learnings through our band resources. You will notice that influence in a lot of my new art work.
I refer to myself as a self taught artist but a great influence came from my mother who was also a self taught artists. I would have to attribute her encouragement and guidance on my creative journey. We would spend many of our visits in her studio for hours on end. She taught me the care of my art tools and to this day I hear her voice every time I clean my brushes.
The trees, sky, water and mountains have always captured my eye so I was not surprised that after my trip to Italy in 2011 for an art workshop plein air painting that I learned to savour those memories from my senses and recreate on canvas. Landscapes from my home area in the Shuswap and my travels have been the inspirations for many of my paintings which are done in acrylics and oils.
I have shown my work for many years at the Courtyard Gallery in Enderby and local businesses as well as several art exhibitions with the Federation of Canadian Artists.
